The Hidden Stair, Hampton Court Palace

The Hidden Stair is a simple compact staircase. The landings and half landings are each made up from four pieces. The landings span between the walls that support the flights as there are no walls across the ends of them.

There are small rebated joints between each tread.

There has obviously been some re-pointing to the joints  on the soffit that run parallel with the flight, which must have opened up a little. It is interesting to see how the joints are staggered – giving a hint of how they are constructed.
