Welcome!
I’m Helen Rogers, a Structural Engineer with a special obsession with cantilever stone staircases. I have worked as a consultant in the design of new staircases, the repair of old flights and analysis of collapsed flights for more than 20 years.
Along the way I have seen and read many interesting things to do with these staircases and this website was started as a place to keep my discoveries together.
I am always interested to hear about other people’s findings and experiences, so please get in touch if you have anything to add.
If you’d like me to take a look at your stair, then please email : helen@numberninety.net

Hello!
I am a Structural Engineer from Madrid, developing a PhD about stairs.
This website has been an amazing discovery!
This summer I was very surprised while I was traveling in Switzerland, and I saw cantilever stone staircases everywhere, as a very common way of construction, even in social housing. Are cantilever staircases that common in the UK? I have never seen them here in Spain. I think they are elegant, beautiful, and quite amazing from the structural point of view.
Please, let me ask you. Are you Helen Rogers? I have studied your papers…
Nice to meet you! Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello, and welcome…
Cantilever stairs are pretty common over here, particularly in Georgian and Victorian buildings. They more or less stopped being used around the 1920’s, but are definitely making a come back now!
I am who you think I am – I hope that the papers have been useful to you.
I’d be interested to see any pictures that you have of the Swiss stairs.
