Campo dei Mori, Venice

It seems that most doorways that you peep through in Venice reveal a cantilever stone staircase! This one is in Campo dei Mori and is apparently part of what was once Tintoretto’s home. Most of the internal stairs that I have see in Venice have been similar to this one – simple, with a swept soffit. In a place where transporting large building components is always going to be problematic, these staircases (made from individual treads) seem an obvious choice.

Many of the buildings show signs of significant movement and the stairs seem to be able to cope with this.
