Society of Antiquaries – Main Staircase

The Society of Antiquaries is based in the West Wing of Burlington House on Piccadilly. The main part of Burlington House was designed by Sir John Denham and was built in the 1660’s . The current East and West wings were added later  and were completed in 1873. They were designed by Robert Richardson Banks and Charles Barry Jr.

The main staircase leads from the Grond Floor up to the fantastic library. The treads  have the laziest ogee profile that I have seen.

The profile gives the flight a lively soffit.

It is interesting to see how the ogee profile is squished around the corner as the quarter landing meets the upper flight.
