These photographs of the staircase in the Sintra National Palace are kindly provided by Adam Stone.
The twisting string is made from separate pieces of stone that are fixed to the ends of each tread. There are pretty carved details on the string and the landing edges.
Unfortunately these days we would probably be required to provide some kind of balustrade, which would rather spoil the effect.
