This staircase was removed in the early 2000’s. It was interesting to see the way that the flight was constructed. It looked as if pockets had been cut into the wall for the treads to be inserted into after the wall was built. Each tread was laid on slate and packed into the pocket with stone and mortar. The “cheese piece” in the landing was a separate piece of stone, held in place with a small notch in the soffit of the landing stone. There were no stools on the ends of the treads.
